New York Magazine: Beyond her control
Posted: 2008-04-28 |
Article courtesy the
New York Magazine, on newsstands now: Meet Mamie Gummer. Her mother is Meryl Streep,
but that’s not why you should know her. It’s possible that the first time you behold the
luminous, lemon-haired Mamie Gummer will be on Broadway, in the Roundabout’s production
of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, where you will watch the dastardly Valmont ravish her, deaf
to her convent-girl entreaties. Or maybe you will catch her in the Tribeca Film Festival,
where she appears in the romantic short "All Saints Day", as a mascara- |

bleared Tinkerbell,
making the walk of shame the morning after Halloween. Perhaps you already saw her in
Stop-Loss, as the young wife of an Iraq-war vet; or in John Adams, on HBO, as the
president’s long-suffering daughter-in-law, Sally. But chances are, whether or not you
know it, you most likely encountered Gummer long before this prolific April, in the 1986
movie Heartburn, when she appeared as a 2-year-old on the hip of her actual mother, Meryl
Streep, and on the lap of Jack Nicholson, who played her dad. The complete article can be
read here.

Breaking out on her own
Posted: 2008-04-25 |
"I look like an upside-down teacup in my costume," says Mamie Gummer about the 1780s
yellow satin frock she wears in "Les Liaisons Dangereuses," playing a debutante seduced
by the wicked Vicomte de Valmont. Maybe so, but between her elegant cheekbones, luminous
skin and clear blue eyes, Gummer also looks a good deal like her mom, Meryl Streep. Gummer
doesn't mind questions about her celebrated progenitor. "I'm sort of resigned to it," she
explains with a deep heart-shaped smile just like You-Know-Who's. Yes, Streep has been
"really supportive" of her 24 year-old daughter's career. No, Streep hasn't been a
pro-active stage mother. "There haven't been any phone calls made for me," Gummer
declares. Currently in previews and opening May 1, Roundabout Theatre Company's revival
of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" marks Gummer's Broadway debut. But already she has enjoyed
meaty roles in three off-Broadway plays - winning complimentary reviews as well as a
Theatre World award - since graduating from Northwestern University in 2005. Between
stage gigs, Gummer has appeared in several films like "Stop Loss" and "Evening" and the
HBO series "John Adams" in which she portrays the President's widowed daughter-in-law,
Sally. "You can find me, like, oh, there I am over by the window sill," she giggles about
her marginal if sympathetic character. The full article can be read here.

"All Saints Day" premieres at Tribeca Film Festival
Posted: 2008-04-07 |
Mamie Gummer can be currently seen in a short subject film called "All Saints Day",
directed by Will Frears, which will be shown at this year's Tribeca Film Festival. The
morning after Halloween, a young man drinking his coffee on his Greenwich Village
steps, meets a young girl. They sit, talk and possibly do and possibly don’t fall in
love. More info on this can be found in the Career section |
